The Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez is a hidden jewel on the Arizona-Mexico border and readily accessible from California or Arizona.

Surrounded by the Baja Peninsula on the West and the mainland to the East, the Sea of Cortez offers many opportunities for travel and exploration.

Travel to Mexico, aside from Rocky Point on the mainland coast, usually requires a visa and a car permit. Bring a birth certificate and/or passport as well as your vehicle registration and insurance card. It is always advisable to purchase Mexican auto insurance, which will protect you during your trip. Remember that requirements can and do change periodically.

Whether you visit the Sea of Cortez from the mainland or Baja, you will have many choices to make. Whale watching and sea kayaking are a great way to see nature up close. You may also want to swim with the whale sharks, the world's largest fish!

The weather on the Sea of Cortez and the surrounding areas is generally pleasant. Winter and Spring are mild although Summer temperatures can be quite scorching. Bring plenty of sunscreen if you visit in August!

Enjoy the miles of sandy beaches or sit under a shaded palapa and enjoy a cold cerveza while you stare out at the beauty of the Sea of Cortez.

Gasoline is readily available on the highways, as are hotel accommodations in the larger towns and camping is another option many people enjoy. Watching a sunrise or sunset on the Sea of Cortez is a memorable experience!
